From a community dream to a university of possibility.
Rongo University’s story is deeply connected to the aspirations of the community it serves. Our journey began in the early 1970s when the Kitere community established a craft apprenticeship centre in response to the need for practical technical skills.
As demand for higher technical education grew, the Union of South Nyanza Welfare Association successfully advocated for the institution’s transformation into a public institution. In 1983, it became the Moi Institute of Technology.
A new chapter began through collaboration with Moi University, enabling the institution to expand its academic offering. The first university-level intake commenced in 2008.

The institution takes on the name Moi Institute of Technology as its technical education mandate expands.
University-Level Education
Collaboration with Moi University opens a new academic chapter, followed by the inaugural university-level intake of students.
Rongo University College
The institution is elevated to Rongo University College, strengthening its academic and institutional identity.

Rongo University is officially granted its Charter, marking its transition into a fully-fledged public university.
