WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK & 1ST NUTRI-WASH CONFERENCE 2025 AT RONGO UNIVERSITY

From 5th to 7th August 2025, Rongo University proudly hosted the national launch of World Breastfeeding Week alongside the inaugural Nutri-WASH Conference, bringing together distinguished leaders, health experts, and development partners to advance the fight against malnutrition.

The celebrations began on 5th August with the official launch of the Rongo University Childcare Center, presided over by the Principal Secretary for Health, Ms. Mary Muthoni, Migori County Governor, H.E. Dr. Ochilo Ayacko, and the Chairperson of the University Council, Dr. Catherine Wangeci. They were warmly received by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Gudu, together with the University Management Board. The new facility is set to provide vital childcare support for staff, students, and the surrounding community.

On 6th and 7th August, the University hosted the 1st Nutri-WASH Conference under the theme “Eradicating Malnutrition in All Its Forms.” The event was officially opened by the First Lady of Migori County, H.E. Dr. Agnes Ochilo, the chief guest, who was accompanied by fellow County First Ladies, H.E. Dr. Margaret Makelo (Bungoma), H.E. Alamitu Guyo Jattani (Marsabit), and H.E. Selina Barchok (Bomet). They were warmly received by Dr. Catherine Wangeci on behalf of the University.

In her keynote address, Dr. Agnes emphasized the critical role of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and applauded Rongo University for its commitment to public health through the establishment of the daycare facility. Dr. Wangeci reaffirmed the University’s dedication to advancing research, strengthening partnerships with county governments, and supporting Nutri-WASH initiatives.

The conference concluded with a thought-provoking panel discussion on advocacy in adolescent health, underscoring the power of collaboration between academia and health stakeholders in promoting sustainable nutrition and hygiene solutions.
